Virgie Grant, affectionately known as “Byrd,” was born on August 4, 1948, in Zanesville, Ohio, to Harold and Daisy (Mullineaux) Smith. She grew up in the Gaysport and Blue Rock area and graduated from Philo High School. Virgie spent many years working as a bartender at the original Fondales in Duncan Falls, Ohio, before transitioning into a career as a Nursing Assistant. She provided her services for a time at Cedar Hills Care Center in Zanesville and later at Grand Strand HealthCare in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. In 1991, Virgie and her husband Leroy Grant relocated to Myrtle Beach, where they have lived ever since.
Virgie peacefully passed away on February 21, 2025, at Grand Strand Medical Center due to complications from a long-term health issue. She is survived by her four children: Shaindel Grant, Shane Grant, Mary (Juan) Santos, and Samantha (Miguel) Tomas, all residing in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Virgie was also a proud grandmother to ten grandchildren: Cherrie McDaniels, Kody (Tasha) Grant, John (Crystal) Santos, Timothy (Carrie) Grant, Selena (Orlando) Siaca, Liyah (Yuni) Santos, Tobey Mitchell, Jensen Mitchell, and Angela and Katelyn Tomas. She also has five great-grandchildren: Bella, Dominic, Little Daniel, Brandon, and Levi, with three more expected in 2025.
Additionally, Virgie is survived by her siblings: Raymond (Sheila) Smith, Mary (Larry) Barnett, Keith “Sam” Smith (Tina Rogers), and David “Jake” Smith, all from Zanesville, Ohio. She leaves behind several nieces and nephews from Zanesville and nearby counties.
Virgie was preceded in death by her parents, Harold and Daisy (Mullineaux) Smith, a brother named Harold “Butch” Smith, and a sister, Annette Smith Jardine Dovenbarger, along with her husband, Leroy “Sonny” Grant.
The family will hold an intimate private ceremony followed by cremation on Tuesday, February 25, 2025, at 1 PM at Lewis Crematory and Funeral Services in Myrtle Beach, SC. A memorial service in honor of Virgie will take place in Zanesville, Ohio, on August 3, 2025, with the time and location to be announced by the family later.
