Stephen “Steve” Charles DeRiggs, age 77, of Little River, SC, passed away Sunday, June 15, 2025, at Grand Strand Medical Center in Myrtle Beach, SC. Son of the late Charles and Alberta DeRiggs, he was born on July 19, 1947 in Fall River, MA.
Steve is survived by Ann, his loving wife of 55 years; daughter Stephanie DeRiggs and partner John Bolling of Mechanicsburg, PA; foster daughter Tracy (Carter) Dougherty of Royersford, PA; sisters Alberta DeRiggs and Charlene DeRiggs both of Kailua-Kona, Hawaii; and grandsons Tyler Battle of Mechanicsburg, PA, Brandon Dougherty of Royersford, PA, and John Patrick Dougherty and wife Emily of Spring City, PA.
In addition to his parents, Steve was preceded in death by his daughter, Holly DeRiggs, and his sister, Kathy DeRiggs.
Steve graduated from Springfield College in MA with a degree in secondary education. He later earned a Master’s degree in education. Prior to moving to Little River in 2018, Steve and Ann lived in New Mexico, Gettysburg, PA, Hilton Head, SC, and East Berlin, PA.
Steve’s career in teaching began on Navajo Indian reservations in New Mexico and Arizona and ended with his highlight – coaching collegiate baseball for Messiah University in PA. He spent the majority of his 40-year career following his passions for teaching and coaching. Over the years he coached many different sports and worked with athletes of all kinds. Coaching lit a light in him. His favorite quote was “Practice with purpose and emotion, play with passion and pride.”
Steve truly touched the lives of thousands of young people as a teacher, coach, mentor, and friend.
Funeral arrangements are being coordinated by Lewis Crematory & Funeral Services, LLC (843) 294-0011. A funeral mass will be held on Thursday, June 19, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. at Our Lady Star of the Sea, North Myrtle Beach, SC. It will be live-streamed at Steve DeRiggs Funeral Mass.
