Roy Edge Obituary

Roy Dean Edge walked into Jesus’ arms and was welcomed into eternal comfort by many awaiting loved ones and friends on August 17, 2021. Born on April 15, 1954, he was a proud Wheeling Island River Rat where his childhood was spent creating mischief and mayhem in the muddy Ohio River with his brothers, sister, and many lifelong companions. He was a Madison School and Wheeling High alumni where he cultivated his love of music and sports. Baseball and basketball paired with the Wildcat drumline later transitioned to fierce racquetball competitions and weekends on the golf course.

Following graduation, Roy served as a Crew Chief in the United States Air Force. He was a proud airman and later veteran with an unwavering love of aviation. His incredible artistic ability followed him into the service where he collaborated on the design for the original 31st Organizational Maintenance Squadron (OMS) Ramp Rats. He later joined the American Legion Post Ohio 0052 to continue building bridges between military and civilian lives.

Beyond his careers in IT Development, teaching and real estate, he was a relentless volunteer through time and leadership. During his tenure with the Madison and Ohio County Parent Teacher Associations, he was an integral part of introducing the first computers to the county’s students and teachers. Roy was a dedicated elder of the Wheeling Island Christian Church wearing many hats to bring Jesus’ love to others through steadfast discipleship. He was a multi decade Rotarian and Paul Harris Fellow serving as Past President, Assistant District Governor, District 6690 Chairman of the New Generation Committee, and Youth Exchange Program coordinator.  Following his relocation to Myrtle Beach, SC, he became a Welcome and Registration volunteer at the Socastee Food Pantry - a non-profit group operated by veterans to provide nourishment to the community.

While life brought many changes to Roy, his love for his ‘74 Firebird, classic rock music, the Mountaineers, and the Steelers remained constant. Most of all though, he loved his family. Rather you were by blood, marriage or just picked up somewhere along the way, he had the ability to never meet a stranger. His family is a loud, boisterous bunch often full of opposing opinions, but he thrived in every moment of the chaos. Roy was the one you counted on for anything from transportation to companionship. His presence filled the room with laughter, jest, and warmth, and his absence leaves a gaping hole in countless hearts. Roy’s persistent focus and fierce loyalty toward family and friends leaves his loved ones with a strong bond toward one another and a diverse community to support them as they continue an earthly life while he watches from above living the best version of himself for eternity. Roy “Razor” Edge, your shift is complete.
