Robert Callahan Obituary

Robert N. Callahan was born in Elizabeth, New Jersey March 19, 1927. Prior to his retirement in 1985, he was a Lieutenant in the Union County Sheriff’s Department. He was educated in local schools, graduating from Thomas Jefferson High School in 1945 and the Union County Police Academy in 1959. He enlisted in the US Army Air Corps in 1944 and was part of Operation Crossroads at Bikini Atoll in 1946, witnessing the detonation of the fourth and fifth atomic bombs. After his discharge, he served in the New Jersey Air National Guard 119th Fighter Squadron as a Staff Sergeant until 1953.

Following his retirement to Myrtle Beach in 1985, he volunteered in many local activities: Associated Charities, Myrtle Beach Fire Department program for burned children, Friends of Chapin Library, where he chaired the book sale for 20 years, and Myrtle Beach Elks Charity Bingo for the same length of time. He was a dedicated member of Elks Lodge 1771, holding many offices and serving on numerous committees. He called Bingo at the Lodge for over twenty years. He is survived by his wife, Patricia, a daughter, Kathleen Vitelli and her husband Joseph Vitelli, of Tucson, Arizona, a son, Kevin Callahan and his husband, Dr. Anthony Forrester of Myrtle Beach, a granddaughter, Rachel Groogan, her husband, Keith Groogan, and great-grandsons Robert and Liam of Milford, New Jersey.

In lieu of flowers, treat yourself to lunch. Living well is the best remembrance.
