Nayland Blake Obituary

Nayland Thomas Blake, “Mr. Nate”, 92, passed away on May, 24 2025 at Tidelands Waccamaw Community Hospital, Murrells Inlet, SC.

“I’m lucky. I had a good life. I had a good wife. I got a couple of great kids. I made a lot of friends along the way. I’ve got no complaints.” My dad said this to me many times over the years.

Dad was born in 1933 in New Bedford, MA into a vibrant family historically rich with scholars and entertainers alike.

Dad served his country and saw the world as radarman (now known as an Operations Specialist) aboard the USS Charles H. Roan during the Korean conflict.

Dad loved art & music. He studied fine arts at the Swain School of Design. You can see that love bear fruit through my brother, visual artist and educator Nayland William Blake.

Dad met my mom, Joan, while working at a record shop in their hometown. Their love for each other and desire to build a family was hard fought at a time when interracial couples were not welcome. They made their new home in NYC.

Dad made his career at Chase Manhattan Bank. He began his career working with some of the earliest IBM computers in circulation. Over the course of 30 years, he rose up the ranks and retired as a second vice president.

In his later years, dad’s passion for the game of golf brought him to Myrtle Beach. Though golf led him here, Dad chose to make this “Grand Strand” his newest and last home because of the people. This community of friends, neighbors and caregivers enhanced and extended my dad’s life immeasurably.

Dad’s warmth and affable nature drew folks to him. His ability to listen made them want to stay. He loved and was loved by us all.

A public service will not be held, but if you’d like to honor my dad, Mr. Nate, here are some ideas:

If you have a few extra dollars, donate it to the charity of your choosing.

If you see someone in need, maybe lend a hand.

Think of your favorite moment with him. Greet the world as he did, with a smile.

Dad will be welcomed by:
