February 2, 1928 – April 30, 2026
Forever in Our Hearts
Jane Genevieve Mattwell was born to Freda and John Lawless in Elizabeth, New Jersey. She earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Pratt University in Brooklyn, NY. While an officer on Pratt’s student council, she met her future husband, Michael Mattwell. She later obtained a Master of Science in Fine Arts from Long Island University, C.W. Post, and a Master of Science in Education from Hofstra University. She was an elementary school art teacher for most of her early career on Long Island, then moved to Ocala, Florida, where she served as art director and taught fine arts at the College of Central Florida at Ocala.
In her early life, Jane enjoyed her children, playing golf, pottery, and painting. In her later years, she loved the tranquility of ink pen coloring books.
Jane passed away peacefully in Surfside Beach, South Carolina. With her loving family by her side on Thursday, April 30th, 2026, at the age of 98. She will be laid to rest at St Gertrude Cemetery & Mausoleum in Northern New Jersey.
Jane will be deeply missed and is survived by her daughters, Nancy Hegarty (Tom) and Susan Fiacco (Bill), her sister, Eleanor, grandchildren, Katelyn Behlke (Cave), Sabrina Fiacco, Nick Fiacco, Isabella Fiacco, and a great - grandchild Genevieve Behlke.
Mrs. Mattwell is entrusted to Kelvin F. Lewis, the funeral director, and the Lewis Crematory & Funeral Home staff of Myrtle Beach, SC. (843) 294-0011.
