Gheorghe Korony, known to his family and friends as Gyuri or George, was born in Romania and moved to the United States in 1994. He worked for the University of South Carolina and AVX Corporation as a research electrical engineer and inventor, whose designs earned 49 patents. However, George’s greatest creation was his beautiful family, whom he loved dearly and unconditionally.
A man of all trades, he was pragmatic and lived his life exactly the way he wanted to. He loved his work, all things science, classical music, and sharing food and drinks with family and friends.
George passed away at the age of 80 on April 11, 2025. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Adela; his son, Andrei Korony, and Andrei’s wife, Ioana; his grandson, Carol; his daughter, Julia Korony, and her partner, Gregory Bell; as well as his brother, Ladislau “Laci” Korony.
George was deeply loved and is sorely missed by his family. His absence will be profoundly felt by all who had the privilege of knowing him. He requested no services; his family will hold a private memorial at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the STEM Next Opportunity Fund to help shape a brighter future for the next generation.
Mr. Korony is entrusted to Kelvin F. Lewis, the funeral director, and the Lewis Crematory & Funeral Home staff of Myrtle Beach, SC. (843) 294-0011
